Johannesburg - The Middelburg High Court has handed down three life sentences to two men who raped and murdered a 14-year-old girl in Middelburg, Eastern Cape police said on Wednesday.

Selwin Jacob, 21, and Leonardo Brown, 20, raped and killed Melanie Esau in January 2005, Captain Erris Claasens said.

Her body was found at the side of a road in Middelburg early on January 15. "She was found semi-naked with cuts over her breasts and private parts," said Claasens.

She was last seen the day before, playing video games at a shop.

Claasens said the girl's parents had not reported her missing and were shocked to learn she was dead.

He said Jacobs was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder, 15 years for the rape and three years for mutilating a body. It was not known whether the sentences were to be served concurrently.

Brown received life for the murder, life for the rape and three years for the mutilation.

Middleburg police recently planted a tree in remembrance of Esau at her school.
