Cops nab 3 in R175m dagga raid
31/07/2006 08:17 - (SA)
Cape Town - Three people were arrested in Cape Town at the weekend for allegedly being in the possession of four tons of dagga worth about R175m.
National Prosecution Authority (NPA) said on Monday Scorpions detectives nabbed the trio after a swoop on a warehouse in Milnerton, Cape Town, on Saturday night.
The men, a South African and two citizens of the United Kingdom, were to appear in the Cape Town magistrate's court on Monday, said NPA spokesperson Lucinda Moonieya.
She said members of the Scorpions unit and the police seized the "high-grade compressed dagga" during a raid after a tip-off from the public.
"The consignment was destined for the UK, where the street value of the drugs would be worth more than R175m."
The three were allegedly "caught red-handed packaging the compressed dagga for export" when the warehouse was raided.
"The dagga, already processed, and compressed, was in the process of being concealed in apple boxes for export to the UK," said Moonieya.
Regional head of the Scorpions Adrian Mopp said his unit was reluctant to comment on the matter as investigations were still carrying on.
"However, I can say that this has all the hallmarks of a highly organised and very professional operation", he said.
