Johannesburg - The merciless torture of a dog, which was spray-painted and whose genitals were cut off, has been linked to Satanism.
Superintendent Eugene Opperman of East Rand police said a Glen Marais resident heard a dog howling continually early on Saturday morning.
"He went to investigate and saw a teenager kicking and hitting a dog mercilessly."
When the man confronted the teenager, the youth apparently tore off the number plate of his motorbike and rode off.
A characteristic Satanic sign was spray-painted on the dog and its genitals had been cut off.
"Satanic signs and slogans were also spray-painted on the wall of a security complex in the area."
Rituals practised around world
Opperman said rituals increased on the East Rand, depending on the "Satanic calendar".
"There're a couple of dates during which rituals occur throughout the world. It was a 'horrorfind weekend' last weekend and Halloween also is around the corner."
He said Satanic groups were always performing rituals.
"It happens all over - not just on the East Rand. Satanism, as such, isn't a crime, but the things surrounding it - such as damage to property and cruelty to animals - are."
