Bloemfontein - An eight-year-old girl was raped by an unidentified man in Makeleketla near Winburg, eastern Free State police reported on Saturday.

Constable Mmako Mophiring said the man had allegedly entered the girl's bedroom at 02:30 on Friday while she was asleep and raped her.

Mophiring said the man fled when the girl's brother, who was sleeping in another room, heard her screaming and went to investigate.

"Their parents weren't at home when the incident occurred," said Mophiring.

He said a case of rape was being investigated.
