Johannesburg - A man was shot dead in a shootout with police on Saturday, when he and eight others allegedly tried to rob a Fidelity cash van in Diepkloof, Soweto.

"The guards were fetching money from a garage when they were approached by the armed men who were travelling in two Mercedes Benz cars. One guard was robbed of his service pistol," said police captain Mbhazima Shiburi.

"Two policemen were pouring petrol at the garage when approached by the men and a shootout ensued. One suspect was killed."

He said the eight others had fled, leaving two AK47 rifles, three pistols and 88 rounds of ammunition.

The service pistol was not recovered, said Shiburi.
