Johannesburg - Alert metro police officers intercepted an attempted hijacking in Alexandra early on Saturday morning, Johannesburg metro police said.
Three armed men held the driver of a car at gunpoint at 05:00 and had already taken the keys to his car when patrolling police officers witnessed the incident, Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said.
"The three car hijackers then fled with the keys after they saw police on the scene."
Minnaar said a police search party was dispatched to look for the hijackers.
A police officer also guarded the man's car while he was waiting for a spare set of keys to arrive. The driver was not injured in the attack.
A case of attempted hijacking was opened for investigation.
Meanwhile, police arrested a 38-year-old taxi driver for he assaulted a police officer after being pulled over for allegedly driving on the wrong side of the road in Randburg.
He is expected to appear before Randburg magistrate's court on Monday.
