Johannesburg - Three men were arrested when the owner of the car they were trying to hijack threw away the keys, said Ekurhuleni metro police on Tuesday.
Spokesperson Kobeli Mokheseng said that at 06:00, a 55-year-old man was held at gunpoint in President Brand Street in Boksburg.
"He got out of his car and threw the keys away from the men. One of the suspects hit the man with his pistol."
While they were searching for the keys, the patrolling crime information and dog unit of Ekurhuleni metro police saw this and responded, said Mokheseng.
Pistol, bullets confiscated
The men, in their 20s, tried to run away, but were cornered in Ann Barnard Street.
A 9mm pistol and two bullets were confiscated.
Charges of attempted robbery, attempted car theft, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and pointing a firearm were laid against the three.
They were taken to Boksburg police station and are expected to appear in the local magistrate's court soon.
The victim said he would go to his doctor for treatment, said Mokheseng.
