Pretoria - Former music star Kori Moraba has been arrested and charged with the rape of a nine-year-old girl.
Moraba, 58, who thrilled fans in the 1970s singing religious and wedding songs, appeared in Pretoria Magistrates' Court in connection with the rape of a neighbour's daughter.
The girl stays a few blocks from his home in Hercules, northern Tshwane.
The state alleges that on May 20 Moraba lured the child into his car and invited her to go to church with him.
Police say the girl's mother reported the case only on July 31 after her daughter had told her of it.
Inspector Paul Ramaloko of Tshwane police confirmed the singer had been arrested on July 31, but was formally charged on August 2.
He appeared in court on August 3 and again on August 14 and was granted bail of R1 000.
The case has been postponed to September 8.
Has released new gospel album
The girl apparently told police that, instead of taking her to church, Moraba had changed direction and driven to a secluded area in Marabastad.
He is alleged to have raped her in his car and gave her R20 to buy her silence.
Moraba was a big star in the '70s and disappeared from the music scene for many years until 2003 when he released another album, The Best of Kori Moraba.
He is now a pastor at the Zion Christian Church (ZCC) in Tshwane.
In 2005, he released a gospel album, Ga Lelakatsa go Tseba.
