Nelspruit - Three men accused of killing a dog and selling its meat have been released on R500 bail each.
Elvis Phiri, 38, Elias Tshukudu, 48, and Domingo Makuna, 74, of Matsulu outside Nelspruit in Mpumalanga, appeared in Matsulu periodic court on Tuesday on charges of violently killing an animal.
They were not asked to plead and the case was postponed to September 18 when Tshukudu and Makuna will apply for legal aid.
The State claims police found three men next to a fire with pots and plates of steaming meat and intestines.
Nearby, were the remains of a black domestic dog.
On Thursday, inspector Morris Sithole of Matsulu police station said that, according to the police charge sheet, a neighbour had identified the remains as those of her dog that had disappeared the day before.
Dog's remains found
"We also discovered another dog's carcass nearby. It looked like a German Shepherd and the remains were exhumed and taken for tests at the Nelspruit SPCA clinic," he said.
SPCA inspector Sharon Cauldwell, who exhumed the other dog, said on Thursday she had found the head, legs and skin of the dog.
"All the other parts had been cooked and eaten," she said.
