Pretoria - Atterbury road next to Pretoria's Menlyn Park shopping centre was the scene of a robbery, two hijackings and a shoot-out between police and robbers on Friday afternoon.

Police spokesperson Constable Brenda Kgafela said it all started after a man withdrew wages from the bank in the Menlyn Retail shopping centre.

As he walked back to the Menlyn Park shopping centre he was confronted by five armed men who pointed firearms at him and demanded the money he had withdrawn.

"Three of the men fled in a red BMW that they came in, the other one hijacked a 4X4 double cab [bakkie] and the fifth suspect hijacked a bakkie," Kgafela said.

Police managed to block off the road before the fifth man could flee in the hijacked bakkie, and shots were fired. The alleged robber was not wounded but arrested by police at the scene. They recovered the bakkie and an unlicensed firearm.

The other four suspects were still at large.
