  • Mmabatho - Eight men believed to be part of an international car hijacking syndicate were arrested in Mafikeng, said North West police on Sunday.

Captain Sabata Mokgwabone said the suspects, two South Africans and six from other countries, had been arrested after a spate of armed-hijack cases were reported in the greater Mafikeng area.

The areas include Mafikeng, Mmabatho and Lomanyaneng.

"The suspects would hijack vehicles in South Africa and take them to neighbouring countries," said Mokgwabone. He would not give further details.

"We are going to show no mercy. Any person who helps, co-operates or gets involved in crime - albeit indirectly - must know they will be met with the full might of the police."

    Inquiry at a crucial stage

The suspects are due to appear in Mmabatho magistrate's court on Monday.

"The police investigation is at an advanced and crucial stage, so police will oppose bail and ask that the suspects be remanded in custody," he said.

Anyone with information that could lead to further arrests can contact police on 072 690 9094 or 082  374 0383.
