Despatch - "There is a lot of beetroot here. Dr Manto Tshabalala-Msimang will be happy."

This joke made by Mike Kwenaite, chairperson of the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality's committee for economic development, managed to make president Thabo Mbeki smile during his visit to the Eastern Cape.

Kwenaite made the comment on Saturday, during Mbeki's visit to a vegetable project in Izinyoka.

Sipho Mnyakana of the Masibulele co-operative was delighted to meet the president and to show off their beetroot and cabbage.

Although their co-operative was doing well, there have been problems. "We plant and sell the vegetables, but then people come at night and steal them," said Mnyakana.

The vegetable project was started in 2003 as part of a community development programme and is self-sufficient, although some issues need addressing.

Mbeki promised that attention would be given to their needs.
