Bloemfontein - A man was arrested on Thursday after he had reported his kombi as stolen, little knowing police already had seized the dagga-filled vehicle.
Free State police said they had found it abandoned and full of dagga next to a road.
Superintendent Susan Moseki said the "stolen vehicle" was first spotted at 03:45 on Thursday on the Dewetsdorp-Bloemfontein road by two members of the Bloemfontein dog unit on patrol.
"They noticed two suspicious looking vehicles, a green Volkswagen kombi and a white Toyota Tazz, travelling towards Bloemfontein," said Moseki.
"About 05:30 they found the kombi abandoned next to the road with 38 bags of dagga inside."
Man had the keys on him
The dagga weighed 480.54kg and has an estimated street value of R625 000.
During the day, the kombi was reported at the Bloemspruit police station as stolen.
"When the stolen vehicle was circulated on police radio the members of the dog unit put two and two together and went to Bloemspruit.
They found a 30-year-old Eastern Cape man with the keys to the 'stolen' vehicle."
He was arrested on charges of defeating the ends of justice and dealing in dagga.
Four more bags seized
The other car was found by police later at a house in Freedom Square, Bloemfontein, by means of a tracking device.
A 46-year-old Capetonian was arrested and another four bags of dagga was seized.
The suspects are expected to appear in Bloemfontein magistrate's court on Monday.
