Durban - A man set his Durban hotel room alight before shooting himself as he was going up in flames, said KwaZulu-Natal police on Saturday.

Police spokesperson captain Gugu Sabela said the unnamed man, staying at the St James Hotel in Durban's Point Road area, apparently set his hotel room alight in the early hours of Saturday morning before shooting himself in the right temple.

Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha said the man died shortly after being admitted to Addington Hospital. He had third-degree burns to 80% of his body.

The fire brigade were called to douse the fire.

Sabela said the man used a 9mm pistol and that foul play was not suspected.
