  • Johannesburg - Three men have been arrested in Kwa-Thema, near Springs on the East Rand, for robbery and possession of stolen goods, said Ekurhuleni police on Saturday.

The men, aged between 20 and 24, were arrested at noon after a tip-off from the public, said Ekurhuleni police spokesperson Kobeli Mokheseng.

The men had allegedly robbed a 29-year-old woman waiting for a taxi on Nkosi Street at 05.20.

"They pointed a firearm at her and took her bank cards, earrings and R140 cash," said Mokheseng.

They then allegedly attempted to rob a 39-year-old woman on nearby Ndala Street at 06.35.

"When they pointed the gun at her, she fought back and they ran away without anything. She was very lucky not to be hurt," said Mokheseng.

The three were arrested at a house on Motsugi Street in Kwa-Thema. They were found in possession of a Beretta 6.35 pistol, said Mokheseng, the gun allegedly used in the robberies.

"We also found a wallet belonging to a member of the Ekurhuleni police."

The men will appear in the Springs magistrate's court on Monday, facing charges of armed robbery, possession of stolen items and possession of a stolen firearm.
