  • Johannesburg - Police foiled a planned cash-heist at De Deur in Gauteng on Sunday, arresting seven robbers - one of them an East Rand policeman - after a tip-off.

Inspector Trudie Wilken said an informant told police the gang intended hitting the Coin Security office on the Old Johannesburg Road in Vereeniging.

Police arrested four of the robbers as they made their way to the office in a police vehicle at 09:00. One of them was an East Rand policeman. The others were also from the East Rand.

They seized a 9mm pistol with no serial number, said Wilken.

Another two robbers, both from Soweto, were arrested at an ambulance parked at the Balmoral Centre, in De Deur. This was to have been the getaway vehicle.

She said the seventh robber was arrested when he got out of a Toyota Condor at the Formula One Hotel, on the Old Johannesburg Road, pretending he wanted to use the hotel's toilet. The driver of this vehicle was still at large.

Wilken said the seven faced charges of conspiracy to commit armed robbery and would appear in Vereeniging magistrate's court on Tuesday.

She said the arrests were made in a joint operation by Vaal Rand crime intelligence, the Gauteng organised crime sector and the Pretoria special task force.
