18/09/2006 17:37 - (SA)
Pretoria - The prosecutor who was attacked and stabbed in her office in Pretoria magistrate's court was in a "stable" condition in Muelmed Hospital on Monday afternoon.
Hospital spokesperson Johan Dednam said the woman was being kept in the intensive-care unit and was in a stable condition.
She was stabbed several times just before 13:00 on Monday while she was working in her office at court.
Inspector Anton Breedt said the attacker tried to steal her cellphone and she screamed when he stabbed her.
Breedt said: "The noise was heard by police stationed as orderlies in a nearby court room and they cornered the man and arrested him."
More charges later?
Police found a cellphone and knife in the possession of the man, believed to be in his early thirties.
He was immediately charged with attempted murder, but more charges might be added, said Breedt.
Makhosini Nkosi of the national prosecuting authority said he did not have all the details of the attack and would comment only once he received a briefing on the incident.
