Johannesburg - A robber was shot and wounded in a shoot-out with police on Monday morning after he and three others robbed a butchery of cash in central Johannesburg, police said.
Inspector Sefako Xaba said: "The armed robbers entered TJ Spot Butchery, held up staff and forced them to open the safe about 10:00."
They took off with an undisclosed amount of money.
"Patrolling metro police saw them running on a street, gave chase and cornered them at Bree and Simmonds streets."
The robbers "panicked" and fired shots at the police who fired back, said Xaba.
One of the robbers was shot in the abdomen and was taken to hospital under police guard.
The other three were still at large, said Xaba.
Police recovered two firearms, one belonging to the injured suspect and the other that had been taken by the robbers from a security guard at the butchery.
In another incident, four armed men robbed a filling station at Melrose Estate about 03:00.
Xaba said the robbers did not fire any shots, but stole an undisclosed amount of money.
They fled in a silver Toyota Corolla.
No arrests have been made.
