Jeppestown: Seven refused bail
04/10/2006 21:16 - (SA)
Johannesburg - Seven of the 18 people arrested after the Jeppestown shoot-out were refused bail in Roodepoort regional court on Wednesday.
The SABC reported that the accused said the state did not have enough information for a successful prosecution.
But the magistrate found the state to have strong prima facie evidence against the accused and declared them a flight risk, as they had provided false names and addresses. All seven were arrested at the robbery.
The case was postponed to October 16, said an official who asked not to be named.
Four policemen and eight suspected robbers died in the bloody shoot-out near central Johannesburg in June.
Two of the men face charges of armed robbery, relating to a hold-up at a Pick 'n Pay supermarket shortly before the massacre.
