Cape Town - A Hermanus school principal is on leave after unruly pupils held him hostage for several hours on Tuesday.
A car belonging to Amos Ndqameni, principal of Qhayiya Secondary School in Zwelihle, was badly damaged when pupils ran amok.
Apparently, the pupils were upset that a teacher's contract, which had expired, had not been renewed.
Police apparently used rubber bullets and stun grenades to disperse the pupils.
Education spokesperson Clifton Frolick said officials of the department managed to defuse the situation.
A team would be appointed to investigate the grievances of pupils and teachers.
Ndqameni was on leave until the investigation had been completed.
Frolick said the situation had returned to normal.
