Port Elizabeth - Three armed robbers left a trail of blood in Saltlake, Port Elizabeth, after
they failed to hijack several cars on Monday.
One robber died and Sydney Felkers, 56, a tavern owner in the area, was
admitted to Mercantile Hospital.
The drama started after three men in a stolen Volkswagen Polo waited to
ambush Felkers in Harrington Street shortly after 09:00.
The men knew Felkers would bank the money he had made over the weekend, said
police spokesperson captain Verna Brink.
The men crashed into Felkers's bakkie with the stolen Polo. They then forced
him at gunpoint to hand over the bag of money.
Driver managed to distract them
Felkers was shot twice in the stomach before the robbers had to flee on foot
as their getaway car was badly damaged in the crash.
The robbers decided to hijack a second car at the corner of Freeman and
Coetzee Streets, but, fearing for his life, the owner of the Toyota Tazz,
Faadiel Sandan, opened fire on them.
Sandan said on Monday one of the three men had put a cocked gun against his
head and told him they wanted his car.
"I distracted them and managed to jump from the car. In his rush
to get away, the driver wrote off my car."
A shoot-out followed between Sandan and one of the robbers, and he shot and
killed one of them.
The dead man's accomplices wanted to get away in a hurry and hijacked
another vehicle.
This time they wanted Kamroedien May's bakkie. They threatened him with a
gun, demanding the keys. But once again they didn't get very far and ended
up in a ditch. They fled on foot.
Brink said they shortly afterwards jumped into a taxi that took them to
Korsten.
Nobody has been arrested yet.
