Port Elizabeth - The saying is that too much joy brings sorrow, and that seems to be the case here.

A bizarre sequence of events - among them a failed hijacking, a bag full of money and a jolly street party - has resulted in three people finding themselves behind bars.

Two men and a woman, who also serve on Bethelsdorp's community policing forum, were caught red-handed on Wednesday with almost R8 000 in stolen money after a wild booze-up on Tuesday night.

The money is apparently part of the R50 000 that went missing on Monday after a failed hijacking and robbery in Salt Lake in which one hijacker was killed and one of their victims was shot in the stomach.

Expensive free booze at street party

The robbers left the bag of money behind, and, in the confusion, a greedy passer-by took to his heels with the money.

Captain Verna Brink said the police had been deeply puzzled about the missing money, but a resident of Freeman Street in Salt Lake solved part of the puzzle on Wednesday.

"A huge party broke out at a house in the street and groups of people streamed in to enjoy the free and very expensive liquor.

"The woman was identified and police found almost R2 000 on her during the arrest," said Brink.

Brink said the woman had put them on the tracks of the two men, who had R8 000 in their possession.

One of the men was reportedly the one who nicked the abandoned loot.

But, another suspect who has the rest of the money is still on the loose?
