Pretoria - A Hoërskool Brits pupil punched a fellow pupil until her fist bled - in full view of about 20 girls and boys in the school's cafeteria.
The fight took place last Friday shortly after break.
A pupil who made a cellphone video recording of the fight, said all the children took out their cellphones to film the fighting "but no one tried to stop it".
"They (the two girls) stopped on their own," said the pupil, who does not want to be named.
According to the girl, the pupil who reportedly started the fight, was apparently regarded as the school bully. "She and another pupil were insulting the other girl and she got angry and pushed her."
"The girl fought back and they began shouting and screaming and swearing at each other. The 'bully' began punching the other girl."
The pupil said the other girl had fought back. "Neither of the two was badly hurt, but the one girl's fist bled a lot."
While the fight was happening, the other pupils apparently stood and laughed and shouted. "There wasn't a teacher or any supervision in the cafeteria that might have prevented the fight," the pupil said.
She added that all the children who'd filmed the fight on their cellphones were summoned to the principal's office later, where he told them to delete the recordings.
The vice-principal Adolf Gouws said the girls' case was being dealt with by the school's management. "Disciplinary steps will also be taken against the pupils and arrangements have been made for this.
"The school also gave the pupils' parents seven days' notice of the hearing."
Leon Basson who chairs the school's governing body said they hadn't yet discussed the issue of the cellphone pictorial material with the principal.
He said the pupils concerned and their parents would have an opportunity to state their case before any steps were taken against the pupils. Basson said it was a pity such incidents happened.
