Newborn dumped in meat bag

Middelburg - A woman gave birth at a taxi rank, and then put the infant into a plastic bag containing meat she had just bought.
Superintendent Malcolm Mokomene of Highveld police said on Thursday that the baby was born on Tuesday at Iraq taxi rank in Middelburg, Mpumalanga.
"A witness alerted a police constable and when she arrived at the taxi rank, a social worker pointed out a woman covered in blood.
"She had groceries in plastic bags and, in the one with meat, they found a newborn baby," he said.
When asked what she was doing, the mother calmly said she was taking the baby home.
The woman was taken to hospital with the baby.
Mokomene was unable to say if charges would be laid against the mother and what they would be.
