Johannesburg - It has gone far enough, and the government has to pull up its socks to improve its efforts to curb crime, the ANC Women's League said on Thursday.
"The Women's League and women in general are upset about the increase in crime in our country," said spokesperson Charlotte Lobe.
"Many women and children are victims of crime and we, as mothers of the nation, are now sick and tired of all the cruel murders."
Baby killed
This statement follows the death of one-year-old baby Khensani Mitileni, who was shot and killed on the back of her mother, Cynthia, during a cash heist in the Johannesburg CBD on Tuesday.
They were caught in crossfire between a gang of transit robbers and security guards.
"An innocent child was murdered in a horrible fashion in a place where a child is supposed to be safest - on her mother's back," the Women's League statement said.
"We demand that the safety and security department improve their systems employed to curb crime.
"We also demand that the justice department should act and ensure that criminals receive effective sentences."
Community policing
The Women's League added it wants police to become more "efficient and visible".
Lobe said the league appeals to all women to become involved in community policing forums and not to protect criminals.
"The community should not provide protection for criminals in their homes because the selfsame criminals will one day turn on them with a cruel vengeance."
