Johannesburg - A woman was hijacked and shot dead on the same day as her favourite lily flowered after a waiting period of three years.
The body of Nicky Bekker was found near her home with a single bullet wound below her right eye after going missing on Tuesday.
Bekker, 27, who worked at Blind SA, a self-help association for the blind and visibly-impaired the past two-and-a-half years, was hijacked outside her flat hours after her mother, Anette Craggs, placed the flower in her flat "to surprise her".
A distraught Craggs told Beeld how excited her daughter would have been to see the flower.
"It's so tragic that my child was murdered the same day the lily eventually flowered."
The lily will be cremated with her "because she'll never see how pretty it looked once it opened".
Hijacked
Leon Craggs, a director of Blind SA, said his stepdaughter arrived home in her blue Volkswagen Chico at 20:00 on Tuesday after she and a friend went to Cresta for a milkshake.
"I heard the gate open, but went to look after a while because she didn't enter her flat (next to them)."
The police were contacted after Bekker and her car couldn't be found.
Missing
Craggs said: "Some of Nicky's friends made placards and leaflets and we kept on hoping she'll still be alive."
Her body was found next to a road in Riverlea, about two kilometres from her flat.
Her car is still missing.
Her mother said: "She had scratch marks on her face and a bullet wound below her right eye.
"A police official found her body on Tuesday, but he only realised who she was after seeing her face on the placards on Friday."
