Johannesburg - A Fordsburg bank and its clients were robbed on Thursday afternoon of cash and personal belongings, Johannesburg police said.

Six armed men posing as customers entered the bank at 14:15 and ordered the customers to lie on the floor, said constable Sefako Xaba.

One of the robbers, armed with a hammer, broke through the bank tellers' glass partition and took money.

The remaining robbers, armed with firearms, harassed the customers for their personal belongings and cash.

About 15 people were in the bank during the robbery. No shots were fired and no one was injured. The men escaped in a getaway car.

"We are looking at the video (footage) from the bank," Xaba said.

A massive search for the robbers was underway, and a case of armed robbery was opened for investigation.
