Johannesburg - A 26-year-old man was hacked to death and his body burnt by an angry mob in Mfongofongo, northern KwaZulu-Natal, police said on Saturday.

Captain Vusi Mbatha said the mob accused the man of being part of a gang responsible for raping and killing women in the community.

"He was attacked on Friday afternoon by community members who suspected him of being a member of a gang that harasses the community," said Mbatha.

No arrests have been made.

Police were investigating a case of murder.
