Delmas - Five men were arrested soon after robbing a Spar manager of R50 000 in Delmas, Mpumalanga police said on Tuesday.
The men walked in on the manager while he was busy counting the money with his assistant at 19:15 on Monday, said Inspector Thabiso Ncongwane.
"Only one of them entered the office first, armed with a firearm and ordered them to lie down. Thereafter, two others entered and they took the money and fled," he said.
"It is believed they walked towards a white car, where two other men were waiting."
Police caught up with the men just 5km from the scene and recovered half of the stolen money and three unlicensed firearms.
"The car and one of the guns are believed to have been stolen in Hillbrow, another gun (was) from a security company, while the third one had its serial numbers rubbed off."
Ncongwane said police were searching for a man believed to have been the brains behind the robbery.
"All we know is that he is the ring leader and is based in Thembisa, where all the other men come from."
The five men are expected to appear in the Delmas magistrate's court on Tuesday.
They would face charges of armed robbery, illegal possession of firearms, and possession of suspected stolen property in regard to the car.
