26/10/2006 13:38 - (SA)
Cape Town - South Africa has asked the United States to explain the reasons for the deportation of Professor Adam Habib, deputy foreign minister Aziz Pahad said on Thursday.
He said the initial indication was that the deportation of Habib, who is the director of the Human Science Research Council's democracy and government's research programme, was a mistake.
"This is not acceptable... we call on the US government to pay a little more attention to the list," he said referring to a list of names of people not allowed into the US.
Pahad said his department received increasing complaints by South Africans refused entry to the US.
"It is worrying us because an increasing number of South Africans are being deported from the United States and Europe without reason," Pahad said.
Habib who had a visa to enter the US went there in his professional capacity as part of an HSRC delegation.
The delegation was to meet a number of institutions including the National Institute of Health, the Centres of Disease Control and the World Bank.
