Johannesburg - A security guard was shot and injured on Sunday when he and an off-duty policeman foiled a hijacking in Jeppe, said Johannesburg police.
Sergeant Sanku Tsunke said the security guard was shot in the shoulder during an attempted hijacking in Van Beek Street, Jeppe, near Ellis Park Stadium.
"He and several other security guards were trying to help a police captain when he was shot in the shoulder," he said.
The police officer was driving along Van Beek Street when he noticed that a white Toyota Conquest had stopped alongside a black BMW.
Tsunke said: "He initially thought it was an accident, but on closer inspection noticed three men standing outside the Conquest holding revolvers and a pistol."
Security guard in hospital
Two other men had jumped into the BMW carrying a 22-year-old driver, his mother and girlfriend. The policeman called security guards for help and there was a shoot-out. The men then fled in the Conquest and a silver BMW.
The security guard was taken to hospital. The policeman and the three occupants of the BMW were not hurt.
"Police found 20 cartridges cases," said Tsunke.
A case of attempted hijacking was opened.
