Durban - A man was shot dead by an armed robber as he went to the rescue of his niece in Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Monday.

Captain Jabulani Mdletshe said Vusi Zulu was shot in the chest in his Mzingazi Reserve home in Richards Bay on Sunday.

The robber kicked down the door to his niece's room and demanded her cellphone. Zulu, who was asleep in a room next door, awoke and heard the commotion. As he entered the room the man fired a shot, fatally wounding Zulu. The man then fled with the cellphone.

Mdletshe said police later arrested a suspect identified by the niece.

The cellphone and an unlicensed 9mm were recovered, and the suspect is expected to appear in court shortly.
