  • Johannesburg - Four armed robbers were injured after being shot at and stoned by angry Mokopane residents after they allegedly robbed a store on Monday, said Limpopo police.

Superintendent Malesela Ledwaba said the men held up staff at a liquor store in Moletlane village about 08:30.

Ledwaba said: "The residents were allegedly alerted and chased the robbers who had stolen cash, a cellphone and airtime vouchers at gun-point from the store."

One of the robbers was shot in the left hand during the chase.

The residents managed to catch the four and took back the stolen items before starting to throw stones at them.

Police noticed the incident during their routine patrol in the area.

"Three of the robbers had to be rushed to hospital for treatment where they are under police guard," said Ledwaba.

He said although communities' efforts to fight crime were applauded, "people should know that they cannot take the law into their own hands".
