'Cop fled cash heist scene'
31/10/2006 22:06 - (SA)
Pretoria - Tshwane police were investigating on Tuesday claims that a police official had fled from a cash-in-transit heist robbery in Rosslyn Road earlier in the day.
Inspector Katlego Mogale said a police vehicle was allegedly following the Red Eagle Transit van, but it sped off towards Ga-Rankuwa when about 15-armed robbers ambushed the van.
Mogale stressed that the person who fled was not a Pretoria police official.
"It is not advisable for a policeman to do that (flee)," he said.
Mogale said the people at the scene gave police the car's registration number.
"Police will investigate where the car is stationed, who was the person driving it and a proper investigation will determine why they left the scene."
Guards told to get out of vehicle
Red Eagle Security's manager Ernie Grobler said his company did not claim that a police official fled from the scene.
He said eyewitnesses at the crime scene told police what happened.
Two guards were injured in the robbery at Rosslyn Road T-junction when about 15-armed men in three cars ambushed the van.
One of the cars rammed into the van causing it to overturn.
The robbers told the guards to get out of the van before they opened fire.
Both guards were slightly injured, but they were not wounded in the shooting.
The robbers made off with an undisclosed amount of money.
ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said the 33-year-old driver and the other guard were taken to Eugene Marais Hospital with chest and facial injuries.
Both guards were in a stable condition.
