  • Johannesburg - Security guards were locked in a car boot while robbers looted their van between Polokwane and Tzaneen in another Limpopo cash-in-transit heist on Wednesday, said police.

Superintendent Ronel Otto: "According witnesses the suspects used four vehicles to force the vehicle off the road while firing several shots."

"When it came to a standstill they commanded the security guards to get out, which they did. The suspects then disarmed the guards and forced them into the boot of a BMW."

The men fled with an undisclosed amount of money in a BMW and a bakkie, leaving behind the BMW with the guards in the boot, and a Mercedes.

The security guards managed to free themselves and alerted the police.

    They were unharmed.

    Fidelity declined to comment

The robbers drove the Fidelity vehicle and the other BMW to a dumping site in the Solomondale area, near Mankweng.

They drove through a wall of a building at the site and used a blow torch to cut the security vehicle open.

Otto said police on the scene estimated that it would take about an hour to cut the vehicle opened with a blow torch.

"I think they drove through the wall so they could be hidden while opening the vehicle."

The Mercedes was stolen in Sandton in October and one of BMWs was stolen in Edenvale in September.

Police were investigating. No arrests have been made.

Fidelity's Limpopo branch was aware of the incident but declined to comment.
