Mpuma police surprise robbers
03/11/2006 17:17 - (SA)
Johannesburg - A gang of armed robbers got an unwelcome surprise when they arrived to rob an Mpumalanga farm, but were instead arrested by waiting police early on Friday morning.
"They were arrested moments before they could execute the attack," said police spokesperson superintendent Izak van Zyl. "They were very surprised."
The foiled attack near Kriel came after a police agent infiltrated the syndicate, which had told a domestic worker to inform them when the farm owner left the house, he said.
"All happened as agreed, but the group were awaited by members of the Mpumalanga Serious and Violent Crime Unit, members of the Gauteng Operations Unit and detectives from Kriel."
Farmer unaware of planned attack
Six suspects, including the domestic worker and her boyfriend, were arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit a crime and possession of unlicensed firearms. No shots were fired.
"They will appear in the Kriel magistrate's court soon," said Van Zyl.
Police also confiscated a 9mm pistol and a .32 revolver with live rounds.
The farmer, whose name was withheld due to safety reasons, was unaware of the planned attack, he said.
Provincial commissioner Afrika Khumalo congratulated the police for "excellent policing initiatives".
