Johannesburg - Four men were wounded - two critically - in an armed robbery in Diepsloot in Johannesburg, during the early hours of Sunday morning, said emergency services.

The men were at their home in an informal settlement when they were attacked by an unknown number of robbers about 00:45, said ER24 spokesperson Werner Wermaak.

He said one of the critically injured men was shot in the chest. The other was wounded in both legs.

The remaining two victims had been shot in the arm and in the leg.

All were taken to Johannesburg Hospital for treatment.

Wermaak said: "We believe the men were shot with a handgun."

It was not known what items had been stolen from the men.

Further details were not immediately available.
