Takkies, T-shirts OK for school

Pretoria - Next year could see the advent of cheaper uniforms if school management bodies decide to implement gazetted guidelines on school uniforms, which make provision for single uniforms in public schools, possibly with takkies or sandals.
The guidelines, published earlier in the Government Gazette, encourage schools to stick with one uniform throughout the year. The proposal for the boys' basic uniform is long pants, short pants or track-suit pants, and T-shirts or collar shirts.
For girls, it is skirts, dresses or gyms with shirts and slacks.
Cost mustn't be a burden
Items such as ties, jerseys, blazers, stockings, shoes, sandals and headgear should be optional.
The guideline is that the uniform should be the choice of the controlling body, and that the school community's financial circumstances should be kept in mind when a new uniform is designed.
The cost of uniforms should not be a burden to parents, and children who cannot comply may not be excluded from a school.
The policy also provides for specific religious wear and, in certain cases, beards for older boys.
