Johannesburg - A teacher uncovered the rape of a five-year-old pupil after finding blood on a toilet seat at an Mpumalanga pre-school, police said on Wednesday.
The teacher, at the school in Leslie near Secunda, was convinced that one of her pupils was being sexually abused after she came across the blood, said Inspector Thabiso Ncongwane.
"She interviewed each child on Monday but didn't get any information. She then asked them to undress and found blood on the underpants of a girl."
The teacher informed the child's mother about her discovery at the end of the school day.
"The next day (Tuesday) the child told the teacher her mother had hit her, so the teacher took the child to the clinic where it was confirmed that the child had been abused," Ncongwane said.
Personnel at the clinic advised the teacher to go to the police and a rape case was opened.
The child later said her older brother had abused her. Police were looking for the brother.
"We may charge the mother with defeating the ends of justice for not reporting what the teacher told her," said Ncongwane.
