Cape Town - A game of Russian roulette during a tik and liquor binge led to the death of her 15-year-old sister, a 19-year-old girl testified in the high court.

Moments later, the teenager from Oakdale in Bellville, burst into tears.

Angelique died shortly after the shooting on July 24 2004 and her older sister lost an eye after being shot in the head during the incident.

She could not explain during cross-examination why she had given five different versions of the fatal event to family members, the police and in court. One version was that Angelique committed suicide.

The older sister, who is in a protection programme and cannot be named, said she lied because she was afraid of the alleged murderers.

Sister was shot in the head

Michael Paulse, 39, and Leslian Jansen, 32, pleaded not guilty to possessing and dealing in drugs, murder, attempted murder, statutory rape and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. Jansen is out on bail.

Elton Lombard, who allegedly sold tik at the shebeen for Paulse along with Jansen and Vernon Williams, said Paulse was very angry on that day because the sisters had pitched up at the house without his knowledge.

Paulse, who was married, started a relationship with Angelique soon after she and her sister had been discharged from a children's home in Durbanville, and were back in the care of their parents.

Paulse apparently regularly gave the sisters tik and liquor at the drug house.

Lombard said he, Paulse, Jansen, the sisters and Williams had had a liquor and tik session late that night in the bedroom.

Paulse was sitting on a crate next to Angelique, while the other three slept on the bed. Lombard was standing in the door.

"When I looked again, Michael had taken out his (illegal) revolver and opened the chamber.

"He threw the bullets on the floor. He emptied the chambers and pointed the revolver at me, himself and Kleintjie Jansen, while repeatedly pulling the trigger.

"Then he took a bullet and put it in the chamber. He pointed it at Kleintjie and me and pulled the trigger." Lombard said he told Paulse not to mess around, before Paulse put the gun down and smoked some more tik.

"He picked up the revolver again before I heard a shot go off, and Angelique was hit in the chest.

"Michael got a big fright, and the sister woke up.

"Paulse ran outside with Angelique's body. The sister was crying and Michael already had Angelique in the veld over the road when we got outside.

"Michael wanted to get help from a bakkie nearby. When he returned, he grabbed the sister around the neck, went down on his knees and shot her through the head", said Lombard.

Paulse grabbed Lombard around the next and told him to keep quiet about what had happened, before they fled.

"Michael wanted to shoot me later, but I pushed him down and ran away." Adam Mohlala is appearing for the state and FJ Murray is appearing for the accused.
