Robbers coin it at depot

Johannesburg - Cheeky robbers first hijacked a Coin security truck, then drove straight to Coin's Modderfontein depot where they made off with a large sum of money and various weapons.
It is not yet clear how much the robbers got away with. Beeld heard initially that there was between R100m and R150m at the Coin depot when the robbers struck.
Later this was reduced to between R10m and R15m, "and we're still counting".
By late Sunday, it was not yet clear which police unit was supposed to be dealing with the robbery.
Rumour had it that the new police unit which was formed this year, the Special Organised Crime Section (SOCS), was supposed to deal with crimes of this nature.
Some time ago, the police disbanded specialised units such as the serious and violent crimes unit, so that their expertise could be deployed at station level.
Beeld heard confidentially that about half the members of SOCS, which would be responsible for investigating robberies such as the one at the Coin depot at the weekend, had not yet completed their detective training.
The robbers were said to have hijacked one of the new money transport vehicles used by Coin and driven straight into the depot, but this could not be confirmed.
They apparently held workers at gunpoint while they loaded the money, which weighs a few tons, into the vehicle.
Beeld's sources said the possibility that one of Coin's workers was involved in the robbery, was not excluded.
