Pretoria - The Lindela refugee centre near Krugersdorp must pay up after illegally deporting a South African to Zimbabwe, where he had to sleep in the veld and beg for food.

David Phadlela, 26, of Johannesburg, who was deported from South Africa in March 2003 after being arrested in a police raid in Yeoville, is taking the ministers of home affairs and safety and security as well as the Lindela refugee centre to Pretoria High Court.

During the raid he showed police a sworn statement about the theft of his ID book.

The two ministers said they would defend the action, but Lindela did not, and Phadlela has won a R40 600 judgment against them by default.

A kind-hearted taxi-driver gave him a lift back to South Africa.
