  • Johannesburg - A man was arrested after a visiting tour guide was raped at a remote Mossel Bay beach at the weekend, Mossel Bay Tourism (MBT) said on Monday.

"It was an unforgivable, despicable and cowardly attack," said MBT chairman Louis Harris.

The woman was attacked on Sunday afternoon.

"The woman was accosted as she left the water after she'd had a swim; she was then forced behind some rocks where she was raped. She managed to escape and call for help from her group, who were walking nearby."

A suspect was arrested within hours and is expected to appear in court on Tuesday.

"We were impressed that many of the police officers who were off duty at the time came back in to the station to help with the investigation. The result was that the alleged rapist was apprehended on the afternoon of the attack," said Harris.

Members of the tourism industry offered help and moral support for the guide and her party of German visitors.

"We will be looking at ways in which we can improve visitor safety in the town," said Harris.

"We've asked for a meeting between the tourism office, the police and the municipality and we'll be doing everything we can to ensure that nothing like this ever happens in Mossel Bay again."
