Nelspruit - A suspected hijacker walked free on Tuesday because of the arrogance of the motorist he was accused of hijacking.
The owner of the hijacked car, Dominic Nkosi, made arrogant remarks while being cross-examined by the defence lawyer in the Nelspruit regional court.
When Nkosi was asked to clarify what he meant by saying it took "plus or minus" three weeks for his car to be recovered, he said: "I believe it is not my fault that you as a lawyer do not understand what "plus or minus" means."
He also refused to read his statement out loud in court because the defence lawyer was speaking Afrikaans.
This despite the fact that there was a court interpreter who was interpreting what the lawyer was saying.
Nkosi's friend, who was with him at the time of the alleged hijacking, Clement Tsela, testified that he knew the suspected hijacker when they were children.
The accused, Roman "Skobho" Nkosi (not related to the motorist) of KaNyamazane near Nelspruit denied being at the scene of the crime.
He accused the motorist and Tsela of implicating him because he once found Tsela wearing his T-shirt after his parent's house was burgled.
He said the case was never reported to police because their mothers were like sisters.
As a result of the motorist's lack of co-operation on the witness stand, Skobho was acquitted and refunded his R5 000 bail money.
