Stabbed pupil 'stable'

Cape Town - The mood at Oscar Mpetha High School in Nyanga was sombre on Wednesday morning, a day after a pupil was stabbed in a classroom during break.
Hlalanathi August, 17, was attacked by three youths who allegedly stormed into the classroom and stabbed him in the forehead and back, in what was believed to be a revenge attack stemming from an earlier argument between the youths.
He was rushed to GF Jooste hospital and later transferred to Groote Schuur where he is in a serious but stable condition.
Three suspects were arrested and police opened an attempted-murder docket.
Oscar Mpetha High School principal Dumile Mawisa told News24 that classes had resumed as usual on Wednesday morning but that "normal" under the circumstances was a relative term.
He said he had spoken to August's father on Tuesday evening shortly after the incident and that he had been understandably upset.
Violence at the school was a serious problem, and needed to be addressed at the community level, where it originated, he said.
"This is a reflection of society on a broader scale," he said.
He said gangsterism was rife in the area and that many of the pupils themselves were part of gangs.
Instituting security at schools would provide a short-term solution but would not be a long-term answer to the situation.
"For me, this is a symbol of a bigger problem," he said, adding that violence in the communities needed to be addressed.
