Johannesburg - A bodyguard was trapped in the boot of a car at the Highgate shopping centre after he was hijacked in Sandton, Johannesburg metro police said on Thursday.
Inspector Edna Mamonyane said a woman and her bodyguard were attacked in the parking lot of a Sandton office building on Thursday evening.
"The two were attacked in the basement of the Edenburg Terrace office building. The woman was dragged out of the car, shots were fired and the perpetrators put the bodyguard in the boot of the vehicle and fled the scene in a Mercedes-Benz," she said.
As metro police were patrolling the streets of Sandton, a man who was assisting the woman after the incident flagged them down.
"The man was already on the phone with the tracking company. He accompanied the officers in their vehicle and the tracking company led them to the Highgate shopping centre on the West Rand.
Bodyguard given oxygen
"The car was found but the perpetrators had already fled the scene. The bodyguard was trapped in the boot of the vehicle and officers struggled to get him out," said Mamonyane.
The man was eventually released at about 20:30 when a friend arrived with a spare set of keys to the car, said ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak.
Paramedics were on the scene. They spoke to the man to keep him calm during his ordeal, and supplied oxygen, but could not free him.
The ordeal of several hours left the man slightly dehydrated.
"He is okay, he complained that he was just hot and thirsty but he suffered no serious injuries," said Vermaak.
