Durban - A Durban man burnt to death when he set himself alight after having a drunken argument with his wife, said police on Saturday.

Police spokesperson superintendent Danelia Veldhuizen said the 30-year-old Chatsworth man had arrived home late on Friday night and he and his wife became embroiled in an argument.

He apparently threw his wife out of the "outhouse" that they were renting, and then poured paraffin over himself and the outhouse and set himself alight.

Veldhuizen said the man had been under the influence of alcohol.

Paramedics declared him dead at the scene.
