Johannesburg - A truck carrying R1.5 million worth of Adidas clothing and footwear was hijacked on route to Midrand, police said on Saturday.
Guateng police spokesperson director Govindsamy Mariemuthoo said the truck, travelling from Cape Town was hijacked by two armed men in Springfontein in the Free State.
"The driver was held up, bound and kept in the back of the truck," he said.
The second driver was asleep in the truck but was tied up by the two alleged hijackers when they became aware of his presence.
The truck stopped in Booysens, Johannesburg where the two suspects got out and fled in a red Toyota Corolla. Another two men then approached the vehicle and began unloading the goods.
"While they were off-loading the goods, the two drivers managed to escape. They stopped a taxi and went to the Booysens police station where they reported the incident," said Mariemuthoo.
When police arrived on the scene, the two men were still unpacking the truck.
They fled on foot and the goods were recovered.
The suspects are still at large but their identities are known to police and arrests are expected soon.
