21/11/2006 19:19 - (SA)
Bloemfontein - Free State police have arrested a man in connection with a farm attack last week, but are searching still for the killers of three people on a Steynsrus farm.
Police made the arrest in connection with the deaths of Eugene Fourie, 56, and his wife Annamarie, 52, who were killed on Rietfontein farm near Verkeerdevlei on Thursday last week.
The couple's daughter Anerette, 32, is still being treated for injuries in the Medi-Clinic Hospital in Bloemfontein.
Police said they had followed up information on the whereabouts of one of the suspects.
Inspector Harry Nagel said the suspect was found about 14:30 on Monday, sitting in front of a house in the Maselspoort area near Bloemfontein.
"When he saw the police he ran away and apparently fired shots at them."
Nagel said police returned fire and the suspect was wounded in the head.
He has been admitted to hospital under police guard.
Police said a pistol without a serial number was found in his possession and there were outstanding warrants of arrests for housebreaking against him.
Police are still searching for two other suspects in connection with the Verkeerdevlei case.
Other farm attack
Meanwhile, police still are searching for the killers of three people on a Steynsrus farm.
Police found the bodies of Louis Fivaz, 77, his 72-year-old woman friend, and a 40-year-old farm worker on Modderbult farm between Ventersburg and Steynsrus on Monday.
"It is suspected the murders took place on Sunday," said superintendent Annelie Wrensch.
"Police found Fivas's abandoned white Fiat Uno early on Monday morning, after which they went to the house and made the gruesome discovery."
Wrensch said the bodies of the three victims were found with multiple injuries inside the house.
"The fact that shots may have been fired at the house also will be investigated."
Police said the name of the woman as well as the farm worker could not be released yet as their next-of-kin had not been informed.
Wrensch said that apart from the Uno that was abandoned, two cellphones seemed to be all that was missing from the house.
Free State police commissioner Amon Mashigo has expressed his condolences to the families concerned.
"I want to ensure the farming community of the Free State that the police will leave no stone unturned to bring the suspect or suspects to book," he said in a statement.
