Welkom - A man who is accused of sodomising his three-week-old son has been allowed out on R3 000 bail.
The 36-year-old technician from Welkom, whose name can't be divulged for legal reasons, cited "extraordinary circumstances" in motivating his bail application.
He has a heart condition that has needed an operation in the past, and he is not receiving the medication that he needs in prison.
He was released under strict conditions. He must report to the police twice a week, may not leave the magisterial district of Welkom and he may not have any contact with witnesses in the case.
Examination under anaesthetic
Apparently the photographs of the sodomised boy's injuries led to the immediate withdrawal of his previous attorney.
The man was arrested after his wife noticed there was something wrong with the baby and took him to hospital.
Doctors who conducted an examination under anaesthetic, found that the baby had been sodomised.
Police seized possible evidence at the man's home and sent it for DNA and other tests.
When he was molested, the boy was in the care of the housekeeper during the day, and his father at night. His mother was in hospital.
After she was discharged from hospital, the father would not allow her or the housekeeper to change the boy's nappies, citing her illness as the reason.
He went to work on a Sunday, and the mother was alone with her child for the first time.
The father is due to appear in court again on March 22 and 23.
